“Rock and Shadow: Forty Weight”, solo exhibition by Melanie Gonzalez,
June 1-30 2019, Gallery at Clipper Coffee
Rock and Shadow: Forty Weight is a collection of new and old works from Melanie Gonzalez’s photography.
Rock and Shadow /Piedra y Sombra comments on the natural substances of the earth, its rocks and minerals, and how humankind’s use of it’s resources in modern civilization and the industrial cities of today create the shadows; mimicking the earth’s natural structures.
The work is rendered in multiple-exposure photography of views from The Bronx, Long Island, the Caribbean, Brazil and Italy.
The scenes may relate to the identities of the artist as a Bronxite and her Taíno background; celebrating, investigating and capturing through analog film the beauty of nature, architecture and people in these places.
Forty Weight is a trucker term for coffee and refers to the portrait series presented throughout the exhibit of a moment in time as a theatrical meal takes place in a Bronx diner.
